Michigan State football is off to a shaky start, but they still have a chance to turn things around. They host the No. 3 team in the nation this weekend. If the Spartans can win in East Lansing, the season can begin to improve. Michigan State football coach Charlie Bachman led his Spartans to a 16-0 victory against the Michigan Wolverines in 1934. While the Spartans won the game statistically, they lost on the field. They accumulated 182 yards from scrimmage, seventy yards on the ground and 15 first downs. That loss broke their 22-game unbeaten streak. In the end, the Spartans finished 6-6, and the Michigan Wolverines failed to earn a bowl invitation.
The two teams have played each other a total of seventy-four times, with Michigan leading the series with an overall record of 71-38-5. Throughout the years, both teams have had periods of dominance. For instance, the Michigan program dominated the Spartans from 1898 to 1933, when they went 23-2-3. The first victories for the Spartans came in 1913 and 1915 under head coach John Macklin. The first forty-four games were played at Michigan’s home field before the teams began alternating fields.
The Michigan State Spartans have lost three straight games. They have lost to Washington and Minnesota, both by three touchdowns. The Spartans had a late-game shot to tie the game but could not get it done. It’s the first time since the beginning of 2019 that Michigan State has lost three straight games.
Michigan State football’s best players were recruited during this period. These included Herb Adderley, Brad Van Pelt, George Webster and Billy Joe DuPree. In addition, Michigan State’s first racially integrated team was led by Denny Daugherty. He was a great recruiter, and is considered one of the best coaches in Michigan State history.
Despite the Spartans’ success, they aren’t always able to reach the Rose Bowl. Despite winning the Big Ten Championship, they couldn’t qualify for the Rose Bowl two years in a row. But the Spartans are still the best team in the conference. This season, they’ve won eight out of ten games against Michigan.
