Work Out World agrees to pay $62,500 in penalties
The state of Massachusetts has decided to take action after Work Out World purchased the memberships of Boston Sports Club without the customers’ consent. The company has agreed to reimburse the memberships of more than three thousand members. It will also offer refunds in full to affected customers.
The lawsuit was filed by members of the Boston Sports Club after the company continued to bill members even though they could not use the services. The company also denied cancellation requests. Although the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office had ruled against the fitness chain, it still charged members for services they could not use.
Refunds for thousands of members
The Attorney General of Massachusetts Maura Healey has secured refunds for thousands of members of the Boston Sports Club. The company has agreed to pay $62,500 in penalties and give refunds to thousands of consumers who purchased memberships with BSC. The suit alleges that the company failed to honor cancellation requests and continued to bill consumers for memberships they had no use for.
The Massachusetts Attorney General’s office has received hundreds of complaints and lawsuits from members. The company has apologised to members for its behavior and is negotiating a settlement. However, a full refund for members will not happen until the club meets certain criteria, such as meeting a certain standard of quality and service.

BSC’s parent company, Town Sports International, sent out an email to all of its members informing them of a cancellation policy and additional compliance information. The email contained information about temperature checks, social distancing measures, and an off-putting line about “truly missing you!” Natasha Franks decided to cancel her membership after multiple attempts.
